Problem

A hiker starts at the origin OO of a rectangular coordinate grid laid on a map. She walks to point A (3 km, 4 km)A\,(3\,\text{km},\,4\,\text{km}) and then proceeds to point B (7 km, 1 km)B\,(7\,\text{km},\,1\,\text{km}). (i) Draw the position vectors r1\mathbf{r}_1 for AA and r2\mathbf{r}_2 for BB from OO using a suitable scale. (ii) On the same diagram construct the displacement vector Δr=r2−r1\Delta\mathbf{r}=\mathbf{r}_2-\mathbf{r}_1 that shows the hiker’s movement from AA to BB. Measure its magnitude and direction. (iii) On the diagram also mark the vector −Δr-\Delta\mathbf{r} and state in words what physical movement it represents.
