Problem
A 0.20 kg ball is moving horizontally due south at 15 m/s just before it is struck by a bat. During the 0.020 s contact interval, the bat exerts a constant force of 500 N directed 35∘ east of north on the ball. Neglect all other forces during the collision.
(a) Determine the vector impulse delivered to the ball by the bat.
(b) Calculate the ball’s velocity (magnitude and direction) immediately after it loses contact with the bat.
(c) Compute the change in the ball’s kinetic energy as a result of the collision and state whether the ball gained or lost kinetic energy.
(d) Suppose instead the bat delivered the same impulse in half the time. Determine the magnitude of the average force that would then act on the ball.
