Problem
A cricket ball of mass 200 g is moving horizontally towards a fielder at 15 m s−1. The fielder catches the ball and brings it to rest.
(i) Calculate the impulse experienced by the ball.
(ii) If the ball is stopped in 0.08 s, determine the average force exerted by the fielder on the ball.
(iii) When the fielder moves his hands backward so that the ball is brought to rest in 0.20 s, find the new average force.
(iv) By what percentage does the average force reduce when the catching time increases from 0.08 s to 0.20 s?
