Problem

A particle performs simple harmonic motion along the x–axis. Its displacement–time graph is a smooth sinusoidal curve with maximum positive displacement of 5 cm and time period 2.0 s. Using only the features visible on such a graph, answer the following: (i) Explain how two instants of zero velocity can be located on the displacement–time graph. (ii) Describe the manner in which the graph allows you to identify instants of maximum acceleration. Give reason. (iii) The gradient of the displacement–time curve varies continuously. Justify why the steepest segments of the curve correspond to the greatest speed of the particle.
