Problem

Carbon monoxide and oxygen react according to 2 CO(g)+O2(g)⟶2 CO2(g)2\,\text{CO}(g) + \text{O}_2(g) \longrightarrow 2\,\text{CO}_2(g) with ΔH=−566  kJ\Delta H = -566\;\text{kJ} for the reaction as written. A rigid steel vessel is charged with 2.50 mol2.50\,\text{mol} of CO and 1.00 mol1.00\,\text{mol} of O2O_2 and the reaction proceeds to completion at constant pressure. (a) Identify the limiting reactant, supporting your answer with stoichiometric reasoning. (b) Calculate the number of moles of CO2CO_2 produced when the reaction reaches completion. (c) Determine the total heat released, in kilojoules, for the reaction carried out in the vessel. (d) Due to insulation inefficiencies, only 60%60\% of the heat released in part (c) is transferred to the surroundings. Calculate the quantity of heat actually transferred to the surroundings and state its sign.
