Problem

The empty tray of an inertial balance oscillates with a time‐period T0T_{0}. When a known mass m1m_{1} is firmly attached, the period becomes T1T_{1}. (a) Starting from the condition for simple harmonic motion, derive an expression for the mass MM of the empty tray in terms of m1m_{1}, T0T_{0} and T1T_{1}. (b) In an experiment the values are: T0=0.40 sT_{0}=0.40\,\text{s}, T1=0.60 sT_{1}=0.60\,\text{s} and m1=0.200 kgm_{1}=0.200\,\text{kg}. Calculate the mass of the tray.
