Problem

A wooden block of mass 10 kg10\,\text{kg} rests on a horizontal floor. It is pulled horizontally by a constant force of 50 N50\,\text{N} using a rope. The floor offers a resistive (friction) force that can take two different values in two separate trials. (a) In the first trial the resistive force is 50 N50\,\text{N}. Calculate the net horizontal force on the block, state whether the forces are balanced or unbalanced, and describe the expected motion. (b) In the second trial the resistive force is 30 N30\,\text{N} while the pulling force remains 50 N50\,\text{N}. Calculate the net horizontal force and the resulting acceleration of the block. (c) Starting from rest, how much time will the block take to reach a speed of 4 m s−14\,\text{m\,s}^{-1} in the second trial?
