Problem

A runner trains on a straight 1 km1\,\text{km} road that lies exactly east–west. She follows this schedule without stopping: (i) Runs 400 m400\,\text{m} east in 2 min2\,\text{min}. (ii) Then runs 300 m300\,\text{m} west in 3 min3\,\text{min}. (iii) Finally runs 500 m500\,\text{m} east in 5 min5\,\text{min} and finishes. Answer the following. (a) Calculate the total distance the runner covers during the training session. (b) Find her resultant displacement from the starting point. (c) Determine her average speed for the whole session. (d) Calculate her average velocity for the whole session, stating its direction.
