Problem

A clean metallic surface has a threshold frequency of 3.5×1014 Hz3.5\times10^{14}\,\text{Hz}. With monochromatic light of frequency 5.0×1014 Hz5.0\times10^{14}\,\text{Hz}, the stopping potential recorded is 1.6 V1.6\,\text{V}. The same surface is now irradiated in two successive steps: (a) the frequency is increased by 20%20\% of its original value, and (b) the resulting frequency is further increased by 30%30\% of the original value. Take e=1.6×10−19 Ce = 1.6\times10^{-19}\,\text{C}. (i) Calculate the stopping potential after step (a). (ii) Calculate the final stopping potential after step (b). (iii) Find the overall percentage increase in the maximum kinetic energy compared with its initial value and express this final kinetic energy in joules.
