Problem

(i) List the physical quantities on which the time period of a simple pendulum depends when the angular displacement is small. (ii) Give a reasoned explanation for why the mass of the bob does not affect the time period, whereas the acceleration due to gravity does. (iii) If a pendulum clock that keeps correct time at sea level (where g=9.80 m s−2g = 9.80\,\text{m\,s}^{-2}) is taken to a hill station where g=9.78 m s−2g = 9.78\,\text{m\,s}^{-2}, will the clock gain time or lose time in one day? Support your answer with suitable calculation.
