Problem

Coal liberates about 3.0×107 J3.0\times10^{7}\,\text{J} of energy per kilogram when burnt. The fission of one 235U^{235}\text{U} nucleus releases approximately 200  MeV200\;\text{MeV}. Given NA=6.0×1023 mol−1N_{A}=6.0\times10^{23}\,\text{mol}^{-1}, 1 u=1.66×10−27 kg1\,\text{u}=1.66\times10^{-27}\,\text{kg} and 1 eV=1.6×10−19 J1\,\text{eV}=1.6\times10^{-19}\,\text{J}, answer the following: (i) Find the energy released when one mole of 235U^{235}\text{U} undergoes complete fission. (ii) Determine the mass of 235U^{235}\text{U} that would produce the same energy as 1 kg1\,\text{kg} of coal. (iii) In one short sentence, comment on the comparative energy densities of coal and 235U^{235}\text{U}.
