Problem

A small power station must supply 1.0\,GWh of electrical energy each day. The station is driven by the fission of 235U^{235}\text{U} and operates with an overall efficiency of 35\%. Take 200\,MeV as the energy released per fission event, NA=6.022×1023 mol−1N_A = 6.022\times10^{23}\,\text{mol}^{-1} and 1 eV=1.6×10−19 J1\,\text{eV}=1.6\times10^{-19}\,\text{J}. (i) Convert 1.0\,GWh into joules. (ii) Determine the total thermal energy that must be produced in the reactor core each day to meet the electrical demand. (iii) Calculate the mass of 235U^{235}\text{U} that must undergo fission per day to provide this thermal energy.
