Problem

Two blocks on a smooth horizontal surface collide and stick together. The first block of mass 4 kg4\,\text{kg} moves to the right at 8 m s−18\,\text{m s}^{-1}, while the second block of mass 2 kg2\,\text{kg} moves to the left at 4 m s−14\,\text{m s}^{-1}. (i) Determine their common speed just after the collision. (ii) Calculate the percentage loss of kinetic energy in the collision (answer correct to one decimal place).
