Problem

Successive readings from the displacement–time record of a body executing simple harmonic motion are noted: the maximum positive displacement of +6.0 cm occurs at t = 0.5 s, again at t = 2.5 s and at t = 4.5 s. The motion is symmetric about the origin. Using this information, answer the following: (i) Determine the time period and angular frequency of the oscillation. (ii) Calculate the magnitude of velocity when the displacement is +3.0 cm for the first time after t = 0.5 s. (iii) If the mass of the body is 0.20 kg, find the kinetic energy at the instant described in part (ii).
