Problem

A long, solid cylindrical conductor of radius RR carries a steady current whose volume current density varies with radial distance according to J(r)=J0rRJ(r)=J_{0}\dfrac{r}{R}, where J0J_{0} is a constant. (i) Obtain an expression for the total current II carried by the conductor in terms of J0J_{0} and RR. (ii) Derive an expression for the magnitude of the magnetic field B(r)B(r) at a distance rr from the axis for points inside the conductor (r<R)(r<R). (iii) Derive B(r)B(r) for points outside the conductor (r≥R)(r\ge R). (iv) On a single set of qualitative axes, sketch the variation of BB with rr from r=0r=0 to r=3Rr=3R. Label the key features of the graph.
