Problem
A sealed 5.0 L container at 298 K contains 0.25 mol of He(g) and 0.25 mol of Ar(g). The gases behave ideally throughout the experiment.
(a) Without performing any numerical calculations, state whether the partial pressures exerted by He(g) and Ar(g) in the container are equal. Justify your answer in terms of the amount of substance present.
(b) An additional 0.10 mol of Ne(g) is injected into the container while the temperature and volume remain constant. Describe qualitatively how (i) the total pressure, (ii) the partial pressure of He(g), and (iii) the partial pressure of Ar(g) will each change. Provide a chemical‐physics justification for every statement.
