Problem

A 0.5 kg0.5\,\text{kg} stone is projected vertically upward with a speed of 15 m/s15\,\text{m/s} from the edge of a balcony that is 10 m10\,\text{m} above the ground. Neglect air resistance; take g=9.8 m/s2g = 9.8\,\text{m/s}^2. (a) Calculate the maximum height reached by the stone above the balcony edge. (b) Determine the total mechanical energy of the stone with respect to the ground when it is at the highest point. (c) On its way down, find the speed of the stone when it is 5 m5\,\text{m} above the balcony edge. (d) Draw an energy bar diagram (qualitative only) showing the relative amounts of kinetic energy, potential energy, and total mechanical energy at the following three positions: (i) the launch point, (ii) the highest point, and (iii) the point 5 m5\,\text{m} above the balcony edge while descending.
