Problem

Bats emit high-frequency ultrasonic waves to locate obstacles and prey. (a) A bat produces sound of frequency 40 kHz40\,\text{kHz} while flying in air where the speed of sound is 340 m / s340\,\text{m\,/\,s}. Calculate the wavelength of this sound in air. (b) Inside a cave the temperature is lower and the speed of sound is 330 m / s330\,\text{m\,/\,s}. Determine the wavelength of the same 40 kHz40\,\text{kHz} sound in the cave. (c) An insect is 2.5 m2.5\,\text{m} in front of the bat inside the cave. How many complete wavelengths of the sound (from part b) fit in the distance between the bat and the insect? Give your answer correct to two significant figures.
