Problem

A 0.80 kg0.80\,\text{kg} puck slides across horizontal ice with an initial speed of 6.0 m/s6.0\,\text{m/s}. After traveling 3.0 m3.0\,\text{m}, it contacts and compresses a light horizontal spring fixed to a wall. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the puck and ice is 0.120.12 everywhere. The puck momentarily stops after compressing the spring, is pushed back, and eventually comes to rest 1.2 m1.2\,\text{m} away from the spring’s uncompressed position. Determine the maximum compression xx of the spring.
