Problem

A student performs several activities with balls to understand how a net push or pull changes motion. Read the statements and answer the following parts. (i) State Newton’s Second Law of Motion in words. (ii) Explain why the direction of the net push (force) on an object must be the same as the direction of the change in its momentum. (iii) A cricket ball of mass 150 g moving at 20 m s−1^{-1} is stopped by a fielder in 0.05 s. Without doing any numerical calculation, explain whether wearing thick gloves (which increase the stopping time) will make the force on the fielder’s hands larger or smaller. Give reason. (iv) A light plastic ball and a heavy leather ball are both brought to rest from the same speed in the same time. Which one experiences the larger force? Justify your answer qualitatively.
