Problem

A student attempts to evaluate K=∫excos⁡x dxK=\displaystyle \int e^{x}\cos x\,dx by first differentiating exe^{x} and integrating cos⁡x\cos x. After two iterations, the student obtains an expression that still contains the original integral KK, leading to circular work. (a) Explain why the student’s initial decision inevitably produces an expression in which KK reappears. (b) Propose a different initial decision about which factor to differentiate and which to integrate that avoids circularity. Justify your proposal conceptually before performing any algebra. (c) Using your proposal from part (b), evaluate KK completely. Show all steps, including how the integral is eliminated from the right-hand side of your work.
