Problem

Two thin converging lenses are fixed 40 cm apart on an optical bench. Lens L1 has a focal length of +10 cm, and lens L2 has a focal length of +20 cm. A 1.0 cm-tall object is positioned 15 cm to the left of L1 on the common axis. Ignore lens thickness. (a) Calculate the image distance measured from L1 for the image produced by L1 acting alone. (b) Determine the distance between that image and L2. Then calculate the image distance for the image produced by L2 acting on that intermediate image. (c) Compute the overall linear magnification of the two-lens system. (d) Find the height of the final image and state whether it is upright or inverted relative to the original object. (e) Indicate whether the final image is real or virtual with respect to L2 and explain how you reached your conclusion.
