Problem

Longitudinal waves can travel along a thin metallic rod clamped at one end. Answer the following. (i) Derive an expression for the speed of longitudinal waves in the rod in terms of its density ρ\rho and Young’s modulus YY. (ii) A brass rod has Y=9.0×1010 PaY = 9.0\times10^{10}\,\text{Pa} and density ρ=8.6×103 kg m−3\rho = 8.6\times10^{3}\,\text{kg\,m}^{-3}. Calculate the speed obtained from the expression derived in part (i). (iii) The speed of sound in air at room temperature is 330 m s−1330\,\text{m\,s}^{-1}. Find the ratio of the speeds in brass and in air and comment on why there is a large difference.
