Problem

Boat A moves with a velocity of 20 km h−120\,\text{km\,h}^{-1} toward the direction N 30∘ E\text{N}\,30^{\circ}\,\text{E}, while Boat B moves with 15 km h−115\,\text{km\,h}^{-1} toward S 45∘ W\text{S}\,45^{\circ}\,\text{W}. Take east as the positive xx–axis and north as the positive yy–axis. (i) Resolve the velocities of both boats into their xx and yy components. (ii) Determine the velocity of Boat A relative to Boat B. (iii) Obtain the unit vector directed along this relative velocity. (iv) Calculate the magnitude of the relative velocity and the angle it makes with the positive xx–axis.
