Problem

A ball AA of mass 0.20 kg0.20\,\text{kg} is moving towards the east with speed 10 m s−110\,\text{m s}^{-1}. It collides head-on with a ball BB of mass 0.30 kg0.30\,\text{kg} that is moving towards the west with speed 5 m s−15\,\text{m s}^{-1}. The coefficient of restitution for the collision is 0.600.60. (i) Calculate the speed and direction of each ball immediately after the collision. (ii) Determine the loss of kinetic energy that occurs during the collision. (iii) State which ball, if any, reverses its direction of motion as a result of the impact.
