Problem

An open organ pipe resonates with a tuning fork of frequency 512 Hz512\,\text{Hz} in its first overtone (second harmonic) when the room temperature is 27∘C27^{\circ}\text{C}. Take the speed of sound in air to be v=331+0.6T (m s−1)v = 331 + 0.6T\,(\text{m\,s}^{-1}), where TT is the temperature in ∘C^{\circ}\text{C}. (a) Determine the length of the pipe. (b) The air in the pipe is now warmed to 47∘C47^{\circ}\text{C}. Calculate the new frequency of the fundamental mode of the same pipe. (c) A second open pipe at 27∘C27^{\circ}\text{C} is required to have the same fundamental frequency as that obtained in part (b). Compute the length of this second pipe.
