Problem

A 0.25 kg0.25\,\text{kg} ball is launched horizontally from the edge of a table that is 1.0 m1.0\,\text{m} above the floor with an initial speed of 4.0 m s−14.0\,\text{m}\,\text{s}^{-1}. The ball lands on a horizontal track on the floor that includes a 0.40 m0.40\,\text{m} region of kinetic friction (coefficient μk=0.20\mu_k = 0.20) immediately before a light horizontal spring of force constant 800 N m−1800\,\text{N}\,\text{m}^{-1}. After maximum compression, the spring pushes the ball back along the same path; the same frictional region is encountered again. Air resistance is negligible elsewhere. (a) Determine the maximum compression of the spring. (b) Calculate the speed of the ball just after it loses contact with the spring on its way back toward the table. (c) Will the ball rise back to the level of the tabletop? Quantitatively justify your answer.
