Problem

For the fusion reaction ²H + ³H → ⁴He + n, use the binding-energy data given below. (a) Binding energy per nucleon: ²H (1.1 MeV), ³H (2.8 MeV), ⁴He (7.1 MeV) (The neutron is taken to have zero binding energy.) (b) (i) Compute the change in total binding energy for a single fusion reaction and hence obtain the energy released in MeV. (c) (ii) Determine the energy released when 1 mol of ²H reacts completely with 1 mol of ³H (Avogadro number = 6.02 × 10²³ mol⁻¹). Give your answer in kilojoules. (d) (iii) Briefly comment on how the result supports the practical interest in controlled thermonuclear fusion.
