Problem

Consider an arbitrary sequence whose nnth partial sum is denoted by Sn (n≥1)S_n\,(n\ge 1). (i) Prove that for n≥2n\ge 2, the individual term ana_n satisfies an=Sn−Sn−1a_n = S_n - S_{n-1}. What is the value of a1a_1 in terms of S1S_1? (ii) Explain why knowing the value of SnS_n for every positive integer nn is sufficient to determine each term of the sequence uniquely. (iii) Describe how the relation an=Sn−Sn−1a_n = S_n - S_{n-1} can be used to decide whether the sequence forms an arithmetic progression, without carrying out any numerical calculation.
