Problem

A sound source of constant frequency 1000 Hz1000\,\text{Hz} is placed at the mouth of a long tube. The wave travels through air inside the tube for 2.0 s2.0\,\text{s} and then through water for the next 1.5 s1.5\,\text{s} as the tube dips into a tank. (a) Taking the speed of sound in air as 330 m s−1330\,\text{m\,s}^{-1} and in water as 1500 m s−11500\,\text{m\,s}^{-1}, calculate the wavelength of the wave in air and in water. (b) Find the total number of complete oscillations produced by the source during the entire 3.5 s3.5\,\text{s} interval. (c) Calculate the total distance travelled by the disturbance in the two media together.
