Problem

A motor-car tyre is checked at sea level where the atmospheric pressure is 1.013×105 Pa1.013\times10^{5}\,\text{Pa}. The mechanic’s pressure gauge shows a reading of 220 kPa220\,\text{kPa} for the air inside the tyre. (i) Calculate the absolute pressure of the air inside the tyre in Pascal. (ii) Express the absolute pressure obtained in part (i) in bar and in millimetres of mercury, taking 1 atm=1.013×105 Pa=760 mm Hg1\,\text{atm}=1.013\times10^{5}\,\text{Pa}=760\,\text{mm Hg}. (iii) If the same tyre is carried without temperature change to a hill station where the atmospheric pressure is 0.85 atm0.85\,\text{atm}, determine the new gauge reading that the same instrument would show.
