Problem
A smooth, frictionless curved track joins two points A and B. Point A is 4m above the ground while point B is 1m above the ground. A stone of mass 0.5kg is released from rest at A and allowed to move to B.
(i) State the law of conservation of mechanical energy.
(ii) Without doing any numerical calculation, explain how the kinetic energy of the stone changes as it travels from A to B.
(iii) Compare the total mechanical energy of the stone at A and at B. Give a reason for your answer.
