Problem

Two segments of a stretched string, ABAB and BCBC, have lengths 0.90 m0.90\,\text{m} and 1.20 m1.20\,\text{m} respectively and are joined at point BB. The linear mass density is the same for both segments, and the tension in the string is 120 N120\,\text{N}, giving a wave speed of 120 m s−1120\,\text{m}\,\text{s}^{-1}. The joint BB acts as a common point for stationary vibrations of the whole string ACAC. (i) Determine the lowest (fundamental) frequency at which both segments can vibrate simultaneously with point BB as a node. (ii) For this frequency, list the positions of all nodes and antinodes along the entire length ACAC (measure distances from end AA). (iii) Draw a labelled sketch of the stationary wave pattern corresponding to this vibration, marking clearly the nodes, antinodes and their separations.
