Problem

Two positive numbers aa and bb (a≠b)(a\neq b) are the first and the last terms of a sequence in which exactly nn numbers are inserted so that the entire sequence is in geometric progression. (i) Find an expression for the common ratio of the progression in terms of aa, bb, and nn. (ii) Write the general term of the inserted numbers and hence obtain the kthk^{\text{th}} inserted number. (iii) Explain, without numerical computation, why the kthk^{\text{th}} inserted number lies between aa and bb when a<ba<b.
