Problem

A small trolley of mass 5 kg moves on a smooth straight track. The horizontal forces acting on it change with time as described below. (i) From t=0 st = 0\,\text{s} to t=3 st = 3\,\text{s}, two forces act simultaneously: 12 N towards the east and 7 N towards the west. Find the net force and the acceleration of the trolley during this interval. (ii) At t=3 st = 3\,\text{s} a new force of 5 N towards the east starts acting in addition to the previous two forces. Determine the net force and acceleration in the time interval 3 s3\,\text{s} to 5 s5\,\text{s}. (iii) At t=5 st = 5\,\text{s} the 7 N westward force is removed while the other two eastward forces continue. Find the net force and acceleration for t>5 st > 5\,\text{s}. (iv) Assuming the trolley starts from rest at t=0 st = 0\,\text{s}, calculate its velocity at t=8 st = 8\,\text{s}.
