Problem
A glass slab of thickness 4.0cm has parallel faces. A ray of light is incident on the first face at 30∘ to the normal and emerges from the opposite face displaced laterally but parallel to the original direction. The refractive index of the glass is 1.52.
(a) Find the angle the ray makes inside the slab.
(b) Calculate the lateral displacement produced by the slab.
(c) In a second experiment with another transparent slab of the same thickness, the lateral displacement for the same angle of incidence is found to be 1.0cm. Determine the refractive index of this second slab.
