Problem

A stretched string of length 1.0 m1.0\,\text{m} is fixed rigidly at both ends. (i) Show that the allowed frequencies of stationary waves on the string are integral multiples of the fundamental frequency. Hence obtain an expression for the frequency of the nnth harmonic in terms of the string tension TT, linear mass density μ\mu and length LL. (ii) For T=40 NT = 40\,\text{N} and μ=1.0×10−2 kg m−1\mu = 1.0 \times 10^{-2}\,\text{kg\,m}^{-1}, calculate the first three harmonic frequencies of the string. (iii) The tension in the string is now increased by 25%25\% without altering μ\mu or LL. Determine the percentage change in the fundamental frequency.
