Problem
(a) State the law of conservation of energy.
(b) A ball is thrown vertically upward from ground level. As it rises, its speed gradually decreases until it momentarily comes to rest at the highest point. Explain, with reasons, why the total mechanical energy of the ball remains unchanged during its upward motion when air resistance is negligible.
(c) The ball eventually falls back to the ground. Describe the changes that take place in the ball’s kinetic and potential energies during its complete journey (upward and downward) and comment on the total mechanical energy throughout the motion.
