Problem

Nitric oxide reacts with oxygen according to the equation 2 NO(g)+O2(g)  ⟶  2 NO2(g)2\,\mathrm{NO}(g)+\mathrm{O_2}(g)\;\longrightarrow\;2\,\mathrm{NO_2}(g). In a controlled study of atmospheric chemistry, a reaction vessel initially contains 5.00×10225.00\times10^{22} molecules of NO\mathrm{NO} and 1.50×10221.50\times10^{22} molecules of O2\mathrm{O_2} at the same temperature and pressure. Answer the following. (a) Convert the initial quantities of NO\mathrm{NO} and O2\mathrm{O_2} to amount in moles. (b) Identify the limiting reactant and justify your choice with a calculation based on the balanced equation. (c) Calculate the amount, in moles, of NO2\mathrm{NO_2} that can be produced under these conditions. (d) Determine the number of NO2\mathrm{NO_2} molecules formed if the reaction proceeds to completion.
