Problem

Two horizontal forces act simultaneously on a block resting on a smooth surface along the same straight line. (i) A force of 2.4×1052.4 \times 10^{5} dynes acts towards the east, while a second force of 0.35 kN0.35\,\text{kN} acts towards the west. Convert each of these forces separately into newtons. (ii) Taking forces towards the east as positive, determine the net force acting on the block in newtons. (iii) Convert the net force found in part (ii) into dynes and state its direction. (iv) If the mass of the block is 4 kg4\,\text{kg}, calculate the acceleration produced by the net force and specify its direction.
