Problem

Consider a quadratic polynomial ax2+bx+cax^{2}+bx+c (a≠0)(a\neq0) whose roots are α\alpha and β\beta. (i) Express bb and cc in terms of aa, α+β\alpha+\beta and αβ\alpha\beta. Give your answer in the simplest form. (ii) Explain how changing the value of the leading coefficient aa while keeping α\alpha and β\beta unchanged affects the coefficients bb and cc. (iii) Let α+β=4\alpha+\beta=4 and αβ=3\alpha\beta=3. Write the quadratic for a=1a=1 and for a=5a=5, and comment on the difference between the two polynomials.
