Problem

In a laboratory demonstration, two strings under equal tension are joined together. A pulse of amplitude 5.0 cm5.0\,\text{cm} travels on the lighter string toward the junction. A sensor measures the reflected pulse to have amplitude 2.0 cm2.0\,\text{cm} and the transmitted pulse to have amplitude 3.0 cm3.0\,\text{cm}. Assume the wave speeds on the two strings are the same. (a) Determine the fraction of the incident energy carried by the reflected pulse. Show your reasoning clearly. (b) Determine the fraction of the incident energy carried by the transmitted pulse. (c) Discuss whether the results from parts (a) and (b) are consistent with energy conservation. What do they imply about any energy losses at the junction?
