Problem
A technician must prepare 250.0 mL of an aqueous HCl solution that is 6.00 M. Two commercial reagents are on hand.
• Reagent X: 37.0 % HCl by mass, density = 1.19 g mL⁻¹
• Reagent Y: 10.0 % HCl by mass, density = 1.05 g mL⁻¹
Only these two reagents and distilled water may be used.
(a) Calculate the mass of pure HCl that must be present in the final 250.0 mL solution.
(b) Determine the masses of Reagent X and Reagent Y that together supply the required amount of HCl while minimizing the combined mass of reagents used.
(c) Convert the masses found in part (b) to the corresponding volumes of each reagent that must be measured.
(d) Identify which reagent, if any, will be present in excess HCl relative to the target composition, and justify your answer quantitatively.
