Problem

Consider the series ln⁡x+pln⁡x+13ln⁡x+…\ln x + p \ln x + \frac{1}{3} \ln x + \dots, where x∈Rx \in \mathbb{R}, x>1x > 1 and p∈Rp \in \mathbb{R}, p≠0p \neq 0. Consider the case where the series is geometric. (a.i) Show that p=±13p = \pm \frac{1}{\sqrt{3}}. (a.ii) Given that p>0p > 0 and S∞=3+3S_\infty = 3 + \sqrt{3}, find the value of xx. Now consider the case where the series is arithmetic with common difference dd. (b.i) Show that p=23p = \frac{2}{3}. (b.ii) Write down dd in the form kln⁡xk \ln x, where k∈Qk \in \mathbb{Q}. (b.iii) The sum of the first nn terms of the series is −3ln⁡x-3 \ln x. Find the value of nn.
