(Long-answer question)
Two bodies P and Q interact over a very short interval of time in an isolated system.
(i) Define the coefficient of restitution for a one-dimensional collision between P and Q.
(ii) State the distinguishing conditions that identify (a) an elastic collision, (b) an inelastic collision, and (c) a perfectly inelastic collision, in terms of both kinetic energy change and the value of the coefficient of restitution.
(iii) Explain, with reason, why linear momentum must remain conserved in every type of collision even though the kinetic energy may not.
