Problem

A photography student experiments with a thin concave lens of focal length −25 cm-25\,\text{cm} to create special effects. A 2.0\,cm-tall figurine is positioned 40\,cm in front of the lens on its principal axis. (1) Determine the image distance sis_i for the figurine. (2) Calculate the height of the image. (3) Sketch a ray diagram that locates the image. Your sketch should include and label (i) the principal axis, (ii) the focal points on both sides of the lens, (iii) the three principal rays from the top of the figurine, and (iv) the location of the virtual image. (A verbal description of your drawing is acceptable in a text-only response.) (4) Suppose the student attempts to project the image onto a white card by moving the card to different positions on either side of the lens. Predict the outcome and explain your reasoning.
