Problem

Two non-collinear vectors P\mathbf{P} and Q\mathbf{Q} lie in the x-y plane. The magnitude of P\mathbf{P} is PP and that of Q\mathbf{Q} is QQ. The angle from P\mathbf{P} to Q\mathbf{Q}, measured through the smaller rotation in the plane, is θ\theta. (i) Resolve P\mathbf{P} and Q\mathbf{Q} into their respective x and y components in terms of PP, QQ and θ\theta. (ii) By adding the components obtained in part (i), write expressions for the components RxR_x and RyR_y of the resultant vector R=P+Q\mathbf{R}=\mathbf{P}+\mathbf{Q}. (iii) Eliminating RxR_x and RyR_y, derive the general expression R=P2+Q2+2PQcos⁡θR=\sqrt{P^{2}+Q^{2}+2PQ\cos\theta} for the magnitude RR of the resultant. (iv) Obtain an expression for the angle α\alpha that R\mathbf{R} makes with P\mathbf{P} in terms of PP, QQ and θ\theta. Clearly state each step used in the derivation.
