Problem

A car of mass 1200 kg is traveling due east on a level, straight road at 20 m/s when the driver applies the brakes. During braking the net horizontal force on the car is a constant 6000 N directed due west. Neglect frictional forces other than the braking force. (a) Calculate the magnitude and direction of the impulse that must be delivered to bring the car to rest. (b) Determine the time interval required for the car to come to rest under the action of the braking force. (c) Suppose the driver maintains the same braking force for only half of the time interval you found in part (b). Determine the speed of the car at that moment and state its direction relative to the original motion.
