Problem

A flat perfectly black plate of area 0.20 m20.20\,\text{m}^2 is maintained first at 300 K300\,\text{K} and later at 600 K600\,\text{K} in a large evacuated enclosure whose walls are at a much lower temperature so that heat received back from the surroundings may be neglected. (i) Write the mathematical expression for the radiant power emitted by the plate at each of the two temperatures. (ii) Calculate the factor by which the radiant power increases when the temperature of the plate is raised from 300 K300\,\text{K} to 600 K600\,\text{K}. (iii) Giving reasons based on the temperature dependence in your expression, explain why the increase in power is far greater than the two–fold rise in temperature.
