Problem

A luminous arrow 2 cm2\,\text{cm} high is placed on the principal axis of a concave mirror of focal length 15 cm15\,\text{cm} at a distance of 40 cm40\,\text{cm} from the pole. (a) Calculate the position of the image, its nature, orientation and linear magnification. (b) The arrow is now moved gradually towards the mirror until its tip reaches the centre of curvature. Without performing fresh calculations, describe how the image distance, size and nature change during this motion. (c) Draw approximate ray diagrams for the initial position and for the position when the object is at the centre of curvature, clearly marking the principal focus and centre of curvature in each case.
